Uploads

Most of the time, my music uploads over 5MB freeze after 20-40% complete.  Dolphin takes forever to throw the error code out. Videos over 6 mB also.

I have my settings set to 20MB in my php.ini file.

How do we edit the time needed to get things rolling again if the site apparently has an upload error?  If I cancel, my browser locks up for about 5 minutes before it lets me browse again.

What needs to be checked to make sure the files are not timing out?

Does this have something to do with the RMS server that runs through Boonex?

If you are sure your setup uses php.ini you might try adding the following to php.ini:

upload_max_filesize = 100M
post_max_size = 100M
max_execution_time = 1000
max_input_time = 1000
memory_limit = 64M

Otherwise you might need to use .htaccess instead.

I will try those settings.  I am not what exactly to do with a .htaccess file as I never messed with it.

I just have the default one installed from Dolphin..

I do have one in my root folder..  Do I need to upload the dolphin version to it, or does the .htaccess file get used when that directory is accessed?

Nope, tried uploading a music file and it stopped at 7%..

How can we reduce the wait time for it to throw the error code..

I think I am having to wait more than 5 minutes before Dolphin realizes someting is wrong.. and if I cancel, the site locks up my browser for a while..

trying the same file uploads: 51% first time, 82% 2nd time, 33% 3rd time, 53 third time.. 4th time, nothing.

What would be stopping the uploads?

What exactly does it do when it keeps connecting to RMS boonex?

I was reading some posts, and it stated that the Boonex RMS server is pretty saturdated now.

I wonder if that might be an issue with the free version.

How do we get a copy of the RMS server software or does it come iwth the purchased version?

Quote · 27 Nov 2008

file uploads do not use the RMS, they use ffmpeg.exe

most hosts do not allow an .exe to run on their servers. if you have a dedicated server then you can install your own RMS but its not needed for music upload

Would that account for sometimes uploads working, and most of the time NOT working?

It seems to have more problems with Music (mp3) than video files.

Just to freeze up at no particular spot during the upload..

Do I need the ffmpeg.exe to be run from my account (the actual .exe file uploaded there) or does the server just need to support ffmpeg?

Okay, so I got this reply from my server:

Hi, Unfortunately you cannot run .exe files on the shared servers. Do they need the ffmpeg.exe to be run from your account (the actual .exe file uploaded there) or does the server just need to support ffmpeg? We do have shared servers where ffmpeg is enabled and supported

If I had a server that supports ffmpeg, I wouldn't have problems with the uploads like I am having?

Well, I appreciate the time to explain a bit.

I will try to resolve the issue with them first.  All is working, just like I stated, video and music uploads sometimes work fine, and at others, do not always complete at different %completes intervals  and the error code Dolphin gives doesn't tell me anything.  I was just wondering what exactly is the purpose of ffmpeg..

I think the host is configuring for me to support ffmpeg..  if not already..

I am wondering if time out issues on uploads might cause the problem because I know for sure via FTP, my uploads time out at least 4 times for 10MB..  they are checking into that also..

Quote · 29 Nov 2008

ffmpeg.exe converts the movie files from mpeg to flv so they play in the flash player

if you have FTP upload timeouts with 10mb files, then i think your host need to look into things more, the issue is with them not Dolphin

Okay. something doesn't make sense then.  If I can get some videos to upload and work, but not others, doesn't that make the ffmpeg in working order?

As for the uploading timeouts, they are checking on that issue.

Does this apply to music (mp3, etc) files also?

Just going off this info it sounds like your host is a bit over protective with their firewall, i had an account with a host that did just the same thing locking me out for 5 mins and i ended up moving away from them.

Interesting post there Kosmic - thanks for that info. If there a log file or someway to figure out what is happening to the upload?
Quote · 29 Nov 2008
well, looks like they got my uploads working. They 'whitelisted' me - whatever that means. Does ffmpeg do something to MP3 files also or strictly videos? So, no one is explaining to me how I am able to still upload some videos and have them play on the site without ffmpeg supported? Can dolphin run without it and just not convert the files over then?

I was lead to believe most host are compat and you dont need the ffmpeg.exe

other than an 8m restrict i havent had any problems  with uploading

Punkin,

you may be right.  after the fix to get me out of the firewall, I have had no problem with video or music..

Will be checking it.  and awaiting an answer of what exactly happens if ffmpeg is not being used..  obviously it works fine without, so how well can it work with?

Quote · 29 Nov 2008

look, its easy.

if dolphin didnt need ffmpeg.exe do you really think that boonex would include a 8mb file called ffmpeg.exe?

its 1/3 of the total Dolphin installation file

I totally unerstand that, but before I start switching servers, I would like to know exactly what the different will be for the site that it doesn't do now.

Quote · 30 Nov 2008

A little surprised they just didnt use ffmpeg.php only about 250k who knows why they do the things they do

But then like i said i havent had to use it because most hosts that i know of give you a direct streamline address

Saying that there are an awful lot of smaller hosts that dont allow exe to be uploaded

I like the dolphin script its eay to follow even thou i have my own little hurdles with the addons
