Use H264 codec? Extra ffmpeg installation?

In the new Flash Apps, "Comments Video Player" and "Video Player" Settings, "Use H264 codec" has been added.  The help tip says it usually requires extra ffmpeg installation.

Does anyone know what this setting does?

How do you get the required ffmpeg installation?

Does this fix the many quality/syncing problems in the previous Flash Apps?

Thanks.

Someday, Someway.

The reality is flash can't be fixed. It is a resource hog, always has been and always will be. I am glad to see it go and it will in the near future. Steve Jobs has stood against it's use for a long time now and because the IPhone and IPad have become so popular, major sites and site builders are starting to move away from it. (Can't view the flash movies with an IPhone, I know, I own one) There are better ways to stream video over the net..

Oh, just in case I didn't make myself clear, that codec is an Apple product designed for quicktime..... I am hoping Boonex is actually adopting the technology to it's software. It will make viewing a Dolphin site via a mac product much better and more fluid. (obviously)

I'm still looking for a more in-depth answer to this new feature.  Can anybody else throw in some input please.

An interesting addition, if I say so myself. And to reply to those claims that Flash is a a resource hog, any content-rich plugin is when it does not have the ability to take advantage of the hardware on the host system. Flash 10.1 and HD-HTML5 perform with little difference on proper systems. I wouldn't trust Steve Jobs for an honest answer, especially when it's concerning his competition.

I had the distinct pleaseru to meet Wozniak and that team way back when I lived in Los Gatos CA. I think you are right about Steve Jobs, he is, and always has been, a bit of a snot.

I've found Steve Wozniak to be more of a care-free and fun-seeking person, while Steve Jobs is the opposite: deadly serious, and controlling over anyone who will let him. Jobs strikes me as a person who's lost a few loose screws in his time, and is now running on several emergency cylinders, which includes modeling his company after Hitler's Germany. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he has a retro-fitted Nazi war flag with the company's logo hung behind his desk for all to see.

Hmm it may be all that but the bottom line is please show me anything that does a better job than the management of both pictures and video than with Slide Show Pro which is a Flash product.  As a person who has published over 600 movies in every format I could find, I cannot find a better product than a FLASH product.  Please if you have one share it with us all as I am very upset with Steve Jobs and his clear ability to ignore the main FLAW in his Iphone and I-Pad which is lack of Flash.  I could care less about what and who he is as a person and or what his thoughts are all I know is I can't play Flash on my my Iphone and it is enough to make you want to throw the phone when it happens BC it can be done but BC Steve doesn't want to do it it is not done.  Why can't they do a Flash Lite or something that he would approve.  I personally think it is child like to act the way Steve is acting but he is in charge.  It reminds me so much of it is a hardware problem no it is a software problem but sir my computer is not working sorry you figure it out.  Please share with me something you have that does better than this?

The main issue is, Steve Jobs prefers complete control over everything, from the development of his products, to applications developed by third party developers. Another issue is that Apple and Adobe are considered to be competitors, which is another reason why Jobs is acting in such a manner. I have a feeling they're working on a software suit to rival Adobe's Creative Suit.

Everyone has their hour in the sun so to speak and what you do why you are in that hour will reflect on if that hour turns into days or you find yourself behind a cloud wondering what happened........ If he continues to act like a child who is playing in "his" sandbox people will leave his sandbox and find a better place to play.  1 hour is a short period of time in the road of life and yes he is enjoying the sunshine in the first 15 minutes of his hour but he is not the only smart person on this planet and he too can be replaced.......

I say all this as a person who has never ever been more attached to one product in my entire life that being my I-Phone......

you need libx264 with ffmpeg.   other video scripts are work fine with H264. still I have problem H264 with dolphin.

So after I install this on my server, how does Dolphin connect to the script?  Is there a place for the path of the ffmpeg to be hooked into Dolphin?

Thanks!

I imagine you just need to compile the ffmpeg binary with the added codec support, and replace the current one with the one recently compiled.

This sounds like Bill Gates and Microsoft. The wanting control over everthing part. But Bill Gates is sorta out of the picture now, but i don't think Steve Ballmer is any better. They all want to control the world.

True, but Microsoft has begun accepting that they don't, and won't, and are now even directly supplying code to the Linux kernel (which, according to Steve Balmer, is "communist"). Apple and Steve Jobs, on the other hand, are aggressively applying its control over people, and ensuring they have complete control over everything from how you use the product, to how it is even reviewed. This may not sound like much, but you need to know how they actually do it. Those rumors you hear from One Infinate Loop aren't all untrue. I'm not saying Jobs and Co. are completely evil, or anything, but it's obvious that he grew up watching 1984 too much.

The three Steves have spoken.

That is what I was looking for...a place to put in a server location such as /usr/bin/ffmpeg   but doesnt seem there is one....so i just need to update the ffmpeg in the /flash/modules/global/apps directory?  or perhaps this new feature doesnt even work.....

Chugga Chugga Choo Choo!

Oh Nos! The thread has derailed!

I will be looking in to this option as soon as I have time. Just FYI, one of the root issues is Dolphin uses an older version of the flash video codec because the newer ON2 VP6 codec that has much better quality with smaller files can cost $3,000+ per server per year to licence.

H264 is in the same area of quality (if not better) and size but is free to use for now.

To add to the confusion, the adobe flash player can play different file types. So you can have (and most people do until html5 is main stream) a flash player that loads a H264 video.
