Having a good, feature rich and bug free forum is going to be a must for me. The Orca forum just isn't going to cut the mustard. Is anyone out there working on adapting the Phpbb or Vbulletin forum into a mod that can be added to Dolphin 7?
I would be willing to pay substantially for a mod like this as I am sure many others also would be. I have posted on this before and I never seem to get any response to it. It can't be that large of an undertaking for someone with competent php skills.
Anyone?

At some point in time i may work on a PHPBB3 mod. But that will be a while off in my plans, and someone else may end up doing it before me.
Trust me, someone will do one. They were done for D6.
Personally i never liked how the intergration works. And d7 complicates it as the groups now use the forums as well.
So i was actually thinking of writing my own native replacement for orca from scratch. Big project though so i have not yet made up my mind what i am going to do. https://www.deanbassett.com |
I appreciate the response. (finally). I think Dolphin is a terrific project but it is painfully obvious to me that Orca was an afterthought created to fill a hole. The amount of bugs that currently exist in it are fairly ridiculous and the function of the forum reminds me of text forums from the 80's.
Having a competent forum code is a MUST for any successful community, especially one like mine (a non dating site) where the posts can become very long and detailed. My current forum sports 15 major categories with over 100 topic and sub topic titles containing many thousands of posts. Managing a forum that size requires a few basic features that are just not present in Orca.
PhpBB would be an ok choice but if I had to choose, I would probably prefer VBulletin. My current forum code is based on .asp and is a very powerful forum. The entire portal was designed around it. I would never have moved away from it but the SooP community of which I was a member for many years has fallen apart and gone the way of so many other user supported sites.
A good forum integration would do much to bolster the Dolphin project. I was surprised by the lack of interest the developers have shown in this particular part of Dolphin. It makes no sense to me at all.

It's not lack of interest for the most part. D7 is new, and most developers, including myself did not want to start mods until the final was released for obvious reasons.
Now D7 is very complex, So it will take time for the developers to learn the code before any project that complex can even begin.
It will take time before developers have something out.

Maybe we need to push the powers that be to accelerate the creation of an api for D7. This would simplify the whole process of mod development wouldn't it? http://towtalk.net ... Hosted by Zarconia.net! |

Fat chance, we can't even get the devs to venture into the forums anymore for support. Bugs are everywhere both here and in D7, premium member features aren't working (for me which I may ask paypal for refund), boonex support is completely non-existent, documentation for D7 is virtually non-existent, and I can go on. For them to take time out to create an API is a pipedream at this point.

Yeah, I figured that out a while ago. I just right click the link, save then open in a new browser window. What a pain in the ass. Every day i get more frustrated. At some point, I'm just going to say F%$&& it and go build something else.
I found out there really isn't a complete list of file and folder permissions anywhere. The install feature only helps you with some of them and I have had to go in manually and adjust several folders just to get some of the mods to install. Now I'm getting a error 403 when i try and upload a video and cannot figire out which file or folder is denying the access.
Of course, a search for that error message brings me nothing usable from the lame asses search engine that exists here.

I'd prefer a new forum solution myself.
Orca is so horrible, I've launched a new forum called The Worst Forum, and it's powered by Orca. So far, I'm getting reports about how horrible it is to register, and how you can't always login. God bless those users who re-register because they've forgotten their password.
I'm also hearing about how it's a tug-of-war match to post in a topic, and when someone posts some Javascript, there's allot more fun to be had.
And the logo of Orca, well, when at a small size, it looks rather naughty.

I, too, am looking for a vBulletin integration module. We scrapped Orca a long time ago when users had problems running Vista and McAffee or their computers were not up to date. MyBB does support groups but not as well as I would like. I have over 200,000 posts in the forums. The problem is that my version of MyBB is older and there was a new version to speed it up. If I am going to pay the cost of that, I would rather go to vBulletin.
I would even be happy to keep Orca as the group forums and also have vBulletin running as the main forum. The problem with vBulletin are all the critical updates so I would not only pay for the module but also for the update installs...and there are a lot of them.

Here is a phpBB3 integration mod. http://www.expertzzz.com/Downloadz/view/6977
However I paid for this mod 2 days ago, and still have NO access to download it...even after sending 4 e-mails to the author!!!
|
There is a phpbb3 and vbulletin mod in the market, i've asked for a demo to see how well it works
@ozidoggy you really are SOL at expertzzz as Alex's blog said it was being shut down and all access to download being turned off. You'll probably have to get the file directly from the author. If you don't hear anything in a few days dispute it with paypal and purchase the one in market if you want a mod.

I don't understand what the big draw to phpbb is.... it doesn't have a wysiwyg editor. Your average member isn't going to like all the BB code. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
I don't understand what the big draw to phpbb is.... it doesn't have a wysiwyg editor. Your average member isn't going to like all the BB code.
I think mainly due to the fact it's the most touted "free" and complex php based bulletin system out there. There are others that are butter in my opinion, but people like it, make mods for it, and it seems to work for a vast majority of site admins (not necessarily site users as you point out). Also I know there are a good many free or very cheap host that offer phpbb already installed.
|
Ouch - $200 for the Vbulliten mod and $175 for the phpBB mod in the market. Too much for me. Why don't they price these things so they are more affordable?
The $50 one at expertzzz is more in my budget.
|
Can you pm me the one on expertzzz, last I checked it was only for dolphin 6. |

BB code is not that hard to get used to. I ran a phpbb forum for quite awhile, and my myspace clone site i did a few years back i delebertly designed the groups to use BB code. I had no complaints.

RE: Ouch - $200 for the Vbulliten mod and $175 for the phpBB mod in the market.
I got all excited when you mentioned a vBulletin integration for only $200, until I looked at it in the Market. No public demo, and you have to allow them to rifle through your files and DB..... FTS.

I can understand the work, but I look at it this way. Why price something at $200 and sell one copy, if you could price it $50 and sell 10 copies?
This is something I would like, but at $200, i'd have to pass on it.

if the installation is done correctly, there shouldnt be much requirement after the installation has been completed for support.
Hi I'm the person selling phpbb3 and vbulletin mods at the price between $175 to $200, the object here is to support the product after sales, it will be an advantage on both side few customers we can provide better support in terms of time allocation. if we're going to sell this like a hot cake price im not sure how to provide quality support after sales, to simplify don't over sale your product beyond your capacity to support it. few people understand this but if you're been awhile with this type business you'll see the picture clearly.
just my thoughts on that.
in D6 once phpbb3 was installed, there were no huge problems, if it was a true integration. phpbb sort of runs itself as well as the other forum packages. so the integration would really be all you would have to provide, not any long standing support, other than providing updates and or upgrades, but that should be able to be ran through the bulletin board application, and not necessarily have any true impactable bearing on the dolphin software.
also, one question, for you, since this is a high cost item, is this item going to be certified by boonex as an approved mod? if you get this product certified, you will most likely be more apt to hit those high digit numbers.
Regards,
DosDawg

1. Why don't you have a link to a demo?
2. Why must we let you poke around in our database, and give you access to our entire site to install the mod? That's BS. I'd consider buying that mod if you didn't have such a ridiculous stipulation placed on it.

Where can I read about this mod you are selling? Can you please provide a link? And as HL also said, a demo would be nice!
|
Are there really people out there dumb enough to give access to their vBulletin license code, complete server access and all passwords stored in the various scripts, access to every database on the server, etc, to a complete stranger? Hard to believe people can be that stupid.
You have to ask for it, since we need to verify who is asking for recording purposes.

We just want to be honest on our terms, its up to the customer to decide.

I understand you wanting to protect your code, but there are better ways to do it than mistrusting your customers. There are plenty of php encoders that will do that for you, and you can personalize the mods so that they only run on a single domain. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
Understandable to protect ones code, but installing it for someone as the only option is not a perfect solution either. There are plenty of people that will figure it out if they really want to. Most mods for sale are traded, given away, sold for a fraction of the original price, and passed along in one manner or other that it don't matter if you sell them for cheap or a lot. Neither means more sales. Encoding would be ideal. I wouldn't give up total access for a mod at any price. If I purchase a mod, and one that isn't exactly cheap if I do not get the entire install for myself then I do not need it that bad. Encode it and give the full installation, provide un-encode full install, or figure out a better solution. DialMe.com - Your One and Only Source For Boonex Dolphin Tutorials and Resources |

Why do you have to verify and record someone for a demo?
You set up D7, install your mod, and you're done. Let people come in, sign up to the demo site, and they check it out and see how it well it works. It does work, right?
You have to ask for it, since we need to verify who is asking for recording purposes.
1. Why don't you have a link to a demo?

Oops! He came here to sell expensive over-priced service and now has to buy that software first?
But you're all right, it is ridiculous to give out all the logins, and passwords. By the way, my host has no access to my site except that he can change things on the server, but not on my site. They always asked me for login to access a problem, after the problem's solved I change the pw again.
Anybody any experience with yabb forums? I used to test them before and I was very impressed, it's free too. In cPanel you have them on one click installation.
|
Ironcube is good and I believe Dolphin is using ZendEncoder themselves to encrypt that ever so important code on the index page that makes the site work or not work. |
Why not just post it publically? What are you hiding? How do you expect to sell this mod when people have to jump through hoops just to see it in action? What happens when someone does actually buy it, are they required to hide it too and have to ask for permission to let someone see it, or God forbid, use it?
if you're interested in buying the mods because of its feature I'm glad to send you a link to see the mods.
|
I would suggest staying away from this mod!

If your script take 3 to 5 days to install, you can keep it. I don't think the script really exists.... why else would you not give a public link to a demo. The only possible reason for you refusing to post a public demo, is that you don't want anyone giving opinions on how well your mod works. You are definitely hiding something.
Posting a link to a demo should be a mandatory requirement for posting mods in the Market. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |

Houston, if I had to guess I would say they are using someone elses mod to do the integration.. they are affraid if they give the demo link the person will be able to see it is their code. Ease maybe? |
I hadn't thought of that, but you're probably right. I really think a live demo should be a requirement for posting a mod. No reputable coder would have a problem with this. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
Now HL they don't have a stolen script. They're just so busy with all those spam posts in the blogs that it's taking so long to get it done.
Personally, I've done the phpBB3 Integration script many, many, many, many, many, many times and it takes about an hour. Curious as to what your doin' that takes 3-5 days. Perhaps handwriting all the code for each site? Hint: Writing the code once, placing it in files and then uploading or copy/pasting the changes works very well.
Next up: If you think that I'd give you access to my sites with all the items they have in them for you to screw them up (you say your a professional, but so does Larry The Cable Guy) then you've got another idea traveling up your spine from your arse. I believe they call it a brain fart.
|
for those who might want it, im giving 25% discount and full money back guarantee if you don't like. just have it a try you wont regret
I hadn't thought of that, but you're probably right. I really think a live demo should be a requirement for posting a mod. No reputable coder would have a problem with this.

latest 100% free software http://www.jsoftwarebuilder.com/winmss/index2.html
I will delete this post soon since its clearly im selling my product in the forum but my purpose here is to defend our business from none-customer of ours.
Your missing a few things here DFB:
1. Noone cares about customer comments, to many fake customer comments are put up all the time.
2. You were asked for a demo site. That means a D7 Install with your mod fully integrated into it. Not a link with pics, but something users can test out and decide if they want to risk it.
3. For once your actually on topic here. Though you shouldn't offer the discount, but you are on topic and NOT spamming for once. The topic is phpBB or VBulletin. So post a link that we can go to and see this working for ourselves, ensure a much faster install time and you might actually sell some of this. Right now, your lettin' your temper out and it's just not workin' for ya old boy, few can do it and your not one of them.

I've contemplated murder for similar reasons, myself. I was working on an integration of Invision Power Board 2.3.6 into Dolphin 6.1.6, but I gave-up on it after running into some issues. What I can't seem to understand, though, is with all these integrations of phpBB and vBulleten, why the hell isn't there any integrations for Invision Power Board beyond an uncompleted and abandoned attempt (besides my own)?

Yes, I am willing to pay some serious cash. I don't even need or want the groups and events forums integrated... just the main forum... that would probably be more trouble than it's worth. If you're serious about taking a look at this, I can provide a copy of IPB 3.0.5 and some other developers stuff. The terms of my IPB license allow one test installation, as long as it is not accessible to the general public.
I can't officially launch my site without this.

Granted that these authors do not offer 24 hour support for mods.. but when my site was screwed up.. I needed urgent support. It took me hours going through my database just to get all the rubbish out of it.
I just didn't trust support after that. So decided to go with the other.

Well, I broke down and bought esase's PHPbb mod. So far so good. The install was easy. All the members accounts show up in phpBB. Avatars didn't show up automatically, but if you delete yours in D7 and upload it again, it did show up in phpBB. Clicking on a profile in phpBB will bring you back to their profile in D7. Registration in phpBB brings you to D7 registration.
It does create a new HTML block for new forum posts on the home page, so you will end up with both Orca and phpBB new posts there. Also a new line in site stats called forum posts, so discussions from Orca will list as well. I would guess that uninstalling Orca would fix that problem.
The default forum tab still brought up Orca, so I went in to the navigation menu setup and found a new block was created but not made active, so I dragged that up and had forum access from the tab now. In runs in a window in D7, but I found if I change the link to the phpBB folder, it will run full screen. Haven't tested if that will cause a problem or not.
I've just put it out for the members, so i'll see how it goes when a few posts start turning up.
I'll update as it gets used...
|
U can disable all orca blocks in the homepage and profile. Do it from the builders section. unmark for guests and members.
What about ESASE's mod for PhpBB? It's only $50 and there is a demo site. Anyone using that yet?

Really? Someone has a working PHP forum mod that will integrate into D7? I need more details please ... http://towtalk.net ... Hosted by Zarconia.net! |

I already disabled the blocks, but the site stats will still show up and a member could still gain access from the stats. Not an issue since an uninstall of Orca will get rid of that.

I just went and tested his board. The first thing I noticed is even though the phpbb forum knows you are a member of the site, it does not autolog you if you are already logged into the site. You can log in, log out of the forum and it has no effect on your surrent site status.
Also, I tried to make a post but it was unsuccessful. Saved it as a draft that I could not find afterwards. I also noticed that even though there have been at least 100 viewers to the site, there is not one single post. This tells me everyone else is having the same issue I am. I couldn't even leave a post describing my issue. It is a fair integration but far from seamless.

Posting is working from my site. I'm able to log in and out from both D7 and phpBB at the same time. There have been a few issues where it didn't work, but for some reason it was seeing the original admin password on the forum which was different than D7.

Ok, this fishboard just dumped a long assed post of mine. I HATE that when it happens. You can never say what you wanted to say as good the second time around!
I just tried Esase's board. I have some issues.
- The board does recognize me as a member of the site
- The board does NOT recognize whether I am currently logged into the site and I have to log in to the board separately
- The board does not seem to be working. I could not add a post. All it did was tell me it was saving a draft. A draft I could not find after it saved it.
- I do not think the board is integrated far enough to take advantage of the site skins/css files and will probably have to be done separately.
It seems like a good integration and I am sure the not being able to post issue can be resolved fairly quickly but that's all I would call it is fair. It is far from being truly seamless in it's operation.

I'm able to log in on one side and find myself already logged into the other. I also find that I log out of one side and i'm logged out of both. I did have problems with seperate logins, but thought it was becase the forum side was still reading the password from the original install which was different from my Dolphin password. I changed my password from the forum side and all works now. and I haven't had a seperate login.... yet.
A minor issue since most people probably check the box to stay logged in anyway.

RE: I have a friend with a copy of IPB. I am going to take a look at this for a while and see if i can come up with something.
I am not making any promises. But i will look. Seems some people are willing to pay some serious cash for this, so i should at least take a peek.
I thought some guy was going to sort you out with this HL? The buddist fella with the long beard.?. He said he had lost contact with "you" some time back and his normal account was inaccessible due to memory lapse. Do not know Satori personally but seems to know his scat(greek)...

Or it might be the same issue you are having with the avatars. You are forced to change your passowrd and this updates the forum, it's not happening upon the initial membership creation process?
Anyway, I like it. It's ten times better than this FISHFORUM....

I had hoped that you as a new member would be different and wouldn't have the double login, but I guess not.
It's a great improvment and a double login is not a problem as long as the accounts work and people can post. And with the option to stay logged in makes it even easier. For $50 it was worth it for me, and with phpBB being free, it fits even better. If a vBulletin mod ever beomes available, and If I ever get to the point where I need to upgrade to vBulliten, at least they have an upgrade path from phpBB. I'm compatible for a future upgrade if/when needed.

You're avatar showed up in the forum, so that problem is only for existing members, not new ones. I can deal with that.

The pet discussions have one right now. If you click on say the dog forum, you will be brought in to choose the general discussion area. More can be added, I just haven't decided what to ad yet. I'm looking at what other similar sites have, but trying not to totally copy them.

OK! This one will work for me. I will be purchasing it. Thanks for all your input. Made my day getting rid of this FRIKKIN FISHFORUM (Can we say coin a phrase here?) http://towtalk.net ... Hosted by Zarconia.net! |
Rather than linking outward from D7, I'm connecting accounts I already have *into* D7 when needed. I have a central membership outside of D7's database and use my own SSO connection process. If in the future I want to migrate to a different platform, I would never worry about connecting D7 to some third party software. I would just enable my SSO system to support that other software and handle everything as a go-between rather than a 1-off solution that I'd have to recode for every new piece of third party software I wanted to connect.
Still, depending on what you mean by "pay substantially", I might be able to help :) I think it should be 1 step beyond a mod, though, and should essentially inherit the way D7 handles any linking to third-party software which uses a distinctly separate form of account & login tracking. It should also work in reverse to be optimal.
I don't want to expose my contact details here, not sure if there's a way you can get in touch with me otherwise.

No clue why the integration would want to pick the site's e-mail addy as the user's e-mail. What is the query that your trying to run? Did you purchase this or is it your own your working on? I'm curious here, haven't really seen a D7 phpBB3 that works yet.

I used admin as a user name in both D7 and phpBB. I had no errors on the install. |
It's simple. I used the same admin username for both. When I installed the mod, I got the error message. The error happened because I did the phobb3_integration stuff before I installed the forum code, then when I ran the admin/modules install, it threw an exception because it was trying ti integrate a username from D7 that already existed in the phpbb3 data tables.
I think the trick is to install the phobb3 forum code, then remove the username form the database, then do the code updates (phpbb3_integration) and then install the mod from admin. That way, there would be no usernames for it to conflict with.

The first thing I did was install phpBB, and the admin account gets created during the install. Then I copied the intergation files over and then made all the manual changes in D7. Then I did the module install inside D7. The admin account already existed in phpBB since that's the first install and there was no conflicts because of it.

I just installed it yesterday. I found three issues:
1. Avatars do not show up in the forum
2. Friends do not show up in the forum user CP
3. There is no instruction on how to do iframe to integrate the forum
It was recommended by my agent and I am sending her questions and I have not got a resolutions yet.
What about ESASE's mod for PhpBB? It's only $50 and there is a demo site. Anyone using that yet?

Hi Denlem, I saw you embed phpbb3 very nicely with your Dolphin7. Would you share how you did it? I also bought the Phpbb3 by esase and there is no instruction on how to integrate.
They said in the features that avatars and friends would brought over to the forums but mine did not brought over? Did yours? Thanks a lots.
Really? Someone has a working PHP forum mod that will integrate into D7? I need more details please ...
It's the $50 version the "esase" has. I have it installed with the stock skin, and all seems well so far. I'm a startup site with only a few forum users, so i'm waiting for them to come in and try it out.
If you want to check it out, my site is http://rubmybelly.net/

The instructions for the install are included with the zip file. What it doesn't say is that you will have to deactivate the forum block in the navigation menu and bring up the new one that was created. If you leave the old forum block there, it will still bring up the old forum.
As far as avatars being brought over, I had that issue as well. I did find that all the member needs to do is delete their avatar in D7 and then add it again. When they do that, it will then show up in phpBB. New members won't have to do that and their avatar will transfer.
My friends were transfered over, but they are all new friends after the phpBB integration. If old friends didn't transfer, it may be like the avatar and they would need to be deleted and added again to show up in phpBB.

Now after the integration, I can't log into the Admin Control Panel. :)

Now after the integration, I can't log into the Admin Control Panel. :)

I just integrated phpbb3 on my site...check it out www.kartingconnectdotcom |
It turned out to be a FF3 issue. I checked phpbb3 forum and other people also have the same problem. It works OK with Safari.
However, I decided not to use the module for now because the iframe. I hope Esase or someone can do the template itegration by not using iframe because of the search engine issues and also it does not give a URL for each post or forum. People can't post a link to the top.

You don't have to keep the forum in a frame. Just create a new navigation menu item and link it to the path to the forum. I recently added that option on my site. Check it out, you'll see Forums and ForumsFull. Forums will keep it in a window in D7, ForumsFull will open a window and go full screen with the forum.

That is awesome! Though it is not 100% perfect yet, that would eleminate some of my concerns about the search engines and lack of urls and I can use it temporarily until finding a better way to do it. I am sure Esase or some of our experts here will find a way to do it without the iframe later on. I gave Esase a comment.
The only problem is when someone is on the ForumsFull, they don't have a navigation menu to get back to the main site but I'll check with folks at phpbb to see how I can put a stripped down menu on the phpbb3.
Great idea!

i purchased the phpbb mod but i'm having some problems that i'm waiting for esase to fix. the old posts do not show only the topic titles. it shows there are pages of posts there when you click on the old topic title, but there is no information there, its blank when you click it. you can ONLY see old posts that were done by the "admin" for everyone else, you can not see any of their old posts. only the new posts. the avatars i can see when i'm logged in as the "admin" but i cant see them when i'm logged in as a regular member. as long as i can get all my old posts to show, and no broken images, then i will be happy with this mod in general. |
I have bought the vbulletin integration with D7 fron Dolphinbugfixing and it is very good. It is embedded nicely in D7 and i can yet not find any problems with the integration.
If you want to see the integration send me an email at stian@absnet.no and i will give you my site's adress. My site is a adult content site just to notify you)

Does the integration include a forum page in groups or the store?

Yeah right. Let's see a demo of the vBulletin integration. That's the one where you don't actually get the mod, you have to let persons unknown, have complete access to your server.
No thanks. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
I'm kind of like an attorney on this one. I only ask the questions that I already know the answer to.... http://towtalk.net ... Hosted by Zarconia.net! |
