Very very slow

I just upgraded from 6.1.6 to 7.0.6. The website's performance is really slow. I have not made the changes public, and with only me navigating through, it takes a while to complete its process. Just loading index.php takes forever.

I checked the processes on the server and the CPU utilization is really low. I have over 4 GB of ram. This is an opensuse 11.4 box ....32 bit. It has 2 processors.

Any ideas?

yeah, most likely need to tune this thing up. with 6.1.6 we didnt have the load that we see with D7 instance. so you could look at optimizing the server for performance.

but since you say there was no load on the server, then that makes it hard to guess at. the only other thing it could be is your connection, or firewall or something failing?

do you have any other sites on that server where you can check page load speed?

I have a 3mbps upload speed and tested out fine when I used http://speedtest.microsoftonline.com/ .

The CPU on my firewall is ok. I still have the previous version (6.1.6) up and its fast. I have it on the same virtual host as my 7.0.6 install. My issue appears to be application related. With only me on the website, it really shouldn't be locking up like that on such good hardware.

My website too.. I have 4 cores processors 2Gb Ram.. NO RMS install..  I am try to optimize to performance server .. but still slow loading..   maybe D7 can't be faster..

I hope that is not the case. It will make the entire application practically useless if it locks up on just one person, installed on good hardware.

I wonder if it has something to do with the way it caches. Because whenever you clear the cache, it takes seems to take substantially longer to load everything the first time. Maybe there is some sort of cache setting that if adjusted, can improve performance?

In this case I am try to my server install xcache but i am try to setup D7.0.6 to clear cache by xcache but doesn't work.. and my website are not work.. only cache by file on my site now..

xCache or better than APC

While one of the slow downs were occurring, I checked the database for any locks. There were none. Just FYI.

I suggest you to install "Profiler" module to find bottleneck.

alexT have you any documentation on the profiler module? exactly what does it do, what would any and all output refer to, and what corrective remedies are available?

What's this "Profiler mod"?

Quote · 31 May 2011

I have a good feeling that the issue is caused by the way dolphin cache's the website.

I noticed that after you go through the pain of loading each section for the first time, it starts moving along. But then there are certain functions within each section that after they are executed for the first time, they also start to move along as well.

This can be a pain since sometimes the cache has to be cleared for settings to take effect. And we as administrations don't go through the trouble of re-caching everything, the users suffer.

The caching in dolphin 6.1.6 was always working perfectly fine. I think something is different with the caching of the new version that is causing a slow down.

This is just a hypothesis.

Any thoughts?

any solution?

If "Profiler" module is installer and running(make sure that you applied modification in header.inc.php file) it should show different timings below each page if you are logged in under admin. By checking different timing you should identify bottleneck. For example you can find sql query, module, page block, etc on the page which is causing delays.

Is there any documentation or any way you can describe how to use the profiler in detail?

Hey guys!

just an update, the slowness is no more. It looks like once dolphin caches everything, the whole website runs perfectly fine.

They should come up with a way to automate the caching process. Like how they have a Clear Cache, they should make a Build Cache.

Just a suggestion! That would prove to be very useful. In the mean time, can anyone think of a way to manually build the cache very quickly?

Like, what if I copied the contents of both cache folders to another directory as a backup? Would restoring that cache let the website function correctly while restoring optimal speed?

unfortunately, you can find on here, that most times whenever something goes wrong on the dolphin site, the first thing that will be suggested to you is to 'clear the cache' so keep a stale copy of cache, would most likely be non-productive.

the cache is created on the fly. if a user changes anything on the profile and you have a backed up set of files for the cache, this will in most cases result in a DB error.

so the short answer is NO, you cant save a set of cached files.
