Video and Profile Options?

What are those different video upload options? What does each one mean?

Also

What do the different Profile View Options do?

Public - Does this mean the general public (as in anyone on the net - via Google search) be able to see the entire profile?

Kindly advise.

The video upload options include:

  1. Flash: this method uses the Flash uploader
  2. Regular: this method uses the non-Flash uploader, which is for those who either can't use Flash or are having difficulties with the Flash uploader
  3. Embed: this method allows the user to add an embedded YouTube video by pasting the link of the video

For the profile view options, it's pretty much common sense.

I guess the best way is the embed the video and upload it to youtube to save on your bandwidth?

A 30sec video took me a while to upload, considering I was the only one on the site.

Video processing is controlled by Cron Jobs and do not appear automatically. These may not run every minute on your site, so I would suggest allowing time for processing. The video processing time will vary on what intervals are set in the cron job and the size of the video.

So if you uploaded a 150MB video, you might want to go eat and maybe take a shower before you can view it :)

So being new to this software and not having worked much with videos etc, what is the best way? Is there anyway to control how members upload videos onto the site? I guess not. I suppose embeded you must first have to upload onto youtube and then link from my site. Is this correct?

I know to some it is simple to grasp, but let me learn from you experts.

You can control the available upload methods from Administration > Modules > Videos > Settings. You can try making sure your cron job is properly setup, since it shouldn't take too long for videos to process and become available after uploading. If you choose to use only the embed option, then yes, the user would first need to upload their video to YouTube before posting it on your site.

Thanks so much. It makes sense.

One more; is there no way to control how many videos a member can upload in a certain time frame? For instance 1 video per 4 days etc.

Also can one restrict the length of the video?

What I am afraid is that users can go crazy and upload their entire wedding video for the world to see and cost me a small fortune in the process, in hosting and bandwidth fees.

You can control permissions for users based on membership levels, which you'll find under Administration > Settings > Membership Levels. Click on an available membership level to edit and you'll be presented with a list of permissions that you can either add or remove. You can also click on these permissions to bring up a window with more options, such as limiting the amount of actions for this permission for a certain period of time.

There's nothing controlling length as far as I know. You can however limit the max filesize allowed through your PHP configuration, which will at least keep people from uploading files which are too large.

Excellent Magnussoft. This is most appreciated and educational.

Sorry, I went back to set the membership info you gave, there is a couple of options that I do not understand;

Number of allowed actions:
infoerror
Number of actions is reset every:
infoerror
This action is available since:
infoerror
This action is available until:

Allowed Actions would be say  1 (only upload 1 every 3 days)

Number Of Actions is reset every 3 (meaning every 3 days - reset the counter from the one above)

The next 2 are not very clear?

The last two options control the availability for the permission. Clicking on either two text boxes reveals a calender which you can use to set the dates.

Damn, why did I not try that first. I clicked on the first 2. Why?

Thanks again

Ok so lets say, I set it up for 1 load every three days, how can I set the dates, because every member joins at different times? So what is the relevance of those last 2 options.

Go ahead and make me pull my hair out.

You seem to be confusing the last two options as a per-user basis. I believe those last two options control the general availability of the permission itself.

Yes, I think I grasp what you are saying. First two are are to control the frequency and interval of the operation. The last two are to control the length of time for the availability of the operation.

Okay lets assume on my site, members can only upload 1 video every 3 days and on this one occasion I have a special event and I wanted to allow them to be upload up to 5 videos in the next 2 days then parameters would be set as follows;

Originally they would be set as; 1, 3, blank, blank

Special 2 day event set as; 1, 2. Dec 30th, 2010 12am, Dec 31st 2010 12am

(Where 1 day is 12 hours)

Does this make sense? Is that how it would be applied?

If you want them to be able to upload five videos for the next two days, you could just change the first two options (which is what you'd need to do anyways) and then revert the changes afterwards.

Yes I see it. I wonder how and when the dates would apply.

I have tried to find the settings to allow the restriction of video posting to embed, and I have navigated to ADMIN>MODULES>VIDEOS>SETTINGS and there is no where that appears.  My D7 is 7.0.5, and going into the TOOLS>MODULES> shows the Video module as version 1.0.5..... any ideas?>????

I would love to restrict the videos to embed only, but do not have the prompts.
