WebRTC vs Voice over IP

First, let me start with WebRTC definition:

WebRTC is a free, open project that provides browsers and mobile applications with Real-Time Communications (RTC) capabilities via simple APIs. The WebRTC components have been optimized to best serve this purpose.

More resources:
WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) is an API definition drafted by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) that supports browser-to-browser applications for voice calling, video chat, and P2P file sharing without the need of either internal or external plugins.

Is this mean WebRTC does not use {VoIP}, but instead it uses browser-to-browser applications for voice calling ?

So if a country has blocked {VoIP} protocol, and since Chat+ is WebRTC based, I was wondering if WebRTC will be a good alternative to let the user community still use voice calling, video chat etc.. Unless I am missing something, maybe WebRTC does in fact use VoIP.. Could someone shed some lights please..

Thanks.

Interesting, based on the link you provided:

The primary difference between the two services is that VoIP uses a multitude of variants such as VoIP over DSL/cable modem, voice over Wi-Fi/3G (VoWiFi/3G), voice over LTE (VoLTE), and Rich Communication Suite (RCS), while WebRTC is solely focused on browser-based communications.

WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) is an API being drafted by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Put simply, its a software intermediary that makes it possible for application programs to interact with each other and share data.

So it appears this would be a great alternative to VoIP.. which is exactly what I am looking for.  I will put this to test and ask some folks to test audio and video from their end..

By the way Prof, on a different thread, you had mention to look for Alex links regarding Video cam streaming, not sure who he is, can you please post his direct link how to use video streaming on Chat+

Thanks.

Prof, what about testing your Chat+ site, did you try to drop MP4 video and see if it works ?
