If there is one thing you can always count on with Boonex, they will always up with some kind of distraction just when we really need them. Not here to rant though - from what I understand of this project will be using OpenID so that people can use their login credentials from several major services. Will we be able to do the same with our D7 sites? I would at least like to allow people to sign on with Google - maybe Facebook, though I didn't like the Facebook connect mod when I tried it. I know there is a mod made my some individual that does this, but I would rather have the function be "factory installed" so I don't get into a configuration with future releases. It seems to me that the registration system is close to the heart of what we are doing, and I do believe that letting people register with other IDs will be important. What do others think about this? Is OpenID planned for D7 anytime soon? - or if I want this should I buy the mod that does this?

No one seems to understand what exactly WebHome is. Actually, not even I do. Jesus, what did they launch? All I know for sure, is that they are supposedly working on a Dolphin 7 module for WebHome which should be released sometime after the apocalypse. I need to understand this better and am not positive I like where it is going. Does that mean we will have to use Boonex Webhome to be our OpenID provider? Couldn't we be our own OpenID provider? The nice thing about this script is we always had complete independence - I am not sure that will be the case with this plan, but I really don't know. |
I don't think 'webhome' is something we need to worry about any time soon... if ever. The average Facebook or Myspace user doesn't even know what OpenID is, and they probably don't care. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |

To be honest, even I don't care about OpenID. Something about a unified login kind of turns me off.

Well it would help my site, especially Google log ins, and I am just trying to see if Boonex will ever do this for D7 or if I should buy the mod that is out there, which will likely be much more configuration control after each upgrade as I do think the registration system is central. I think they should have gotten that done for D7 before launching some new venture. I've been away from this forum for a while working on other things so didn't read the blog comments until just now - it looks like this isn't a real popular move with many of the more talented people here. |
No... it's not going to be very popular. I think most people here would rather Boonex conquer Dolphin, before they move on to the entire world.
I wasn't aware of an OpenID mod. Where is it? My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
It is here: http://www.boonex.com/unity/extensions/entry/RPX_Integration_Login_for_D7 - and it looks decent. I'm pretty broke right now or I would plunk down the $65, but I would still rather this be integrated in the official version of D7 |
You sure you want to use that? Isn't it going to circumvent all the information gathering you do on your join form, and give you essentially blank profiles? My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
Now, if it could be configured so that you can sign on, but limit the account until the user filled out the usual profile information.... that would be a lot better. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
I want to have other login options on my site, but I absolutely don't want anyone to circumvent information gathering on my join form, and that is how I think all those things should work (Facebook connect, etc). If you have "required fields" the login credentials should take you only as far as the username, password, and whatever other information you can confidently gather from the host ID provider- you should still have to fill out the rest of the profile like everyone else. That is another reason I would rather have Boonex integrate this capability into the product. |
You made your second post while I was writing more or less the same thing you said. |
|
I tried the demo for that RPX integration. It makes up part of your user name, which if you change by editing your profile info, you can no longer log in. Pretty serious flaw if you ask me, because I'm pretty sure most people will want to do this. It all would make a lot more sense if Dolphin nixed the user name login, and used email address exclusively. I don't get too excited about things Google does. All OpenSocial ever did, was make it easier than ever to find totally useless apps. Google Wave was supposed to revolutionize communication, and like a lot of other techno stuff, people just didn't 'get it'. Sorta like I feel about 'webhome'... I don't 'get it'. If brilliant webmasters like us don't 'get' webhome, I don't know how the average internet user ever will. Oh... and let's not forget Google's Orkut... another big flop. Google just dreams of controlling everything they possibly can. When one thing flops, they quickly come out with another innovation to change the world.
I can understand the Boonex coders needing some projects to tinker around with in the background, but the simple fact is, there's enough work to be done on Dolphin to keep them busy 24/7 for the next year. I don't like Wave either, but I am having fun on Buzz - meeting all sorts of cool people, and Orkut seems to be making something of a comeback.
To the point though, that mod probably should have been made with an email only login- you're right, that would make things less complicated. Maybe Boonex should have taken $5000 of that $200,000, bought that guy out and done it right. I'm sure he would have jumped. Probably that money could have even gotten a halfway decent CEO in this market, along with some stock options.
It is more or less irrelevant whether I like what Google is doing or not - they probably are trying to control the world, but they are a market reality. In the same way you didn't want to dismiss Microsoft in the 90s even if you didn't like them, you don't want to dismiss Google in this era. Have you seen Friend Connect? I think having people access our sites through other ID providers is going to be the wave of the future. I think Boonex knows this too. I just wish they had given us this capability at the same time they gave it to one of their new ventures. I think this capability should have been a priority early on.
