Website stressing server

My site is on an Arvixe dedicated server with 700 members but only up to about 20 members at a time on line. Every so often the site with slow and come to a complete halt and hang causing us to stress the server out.

Now after constant requests of help from Arvixe they say the database/site needs optimising but according to someone on here that's not a good idea as it could cause issues with future software upgrades.

Anyone suggest help to this problem or a Dolphin friendly hosting?

I'm beginning to wonder if I'm on the right hosting package.

Does anyone have experience of the WHM panel of a website and able to check what my hosting package is, I do know what it should be?

Sorry, when we spoke yesterday I thought you were on a shared hosting package. If you have access to WHM then you are either on a VPS or dedicated server. If that's the case then you should optimize the server itself. If you wanted to hire someone to do it you could post in the jobs section here. If you wanted to give it a go yourself this should help:

Again, if you are on shared hosting you won't be able to make most of these changes.
