That is a VERY big question- there are entire forums - many of them, dedicated to that question.   Start by just making your site really good.  Get at least a few inbound links - from your own sites if necessary.  More later - this question is a little overwhelming.

  1. Come of with a Marketing Plan, either small or big, but you must have a understanding of who your target market is.  The Internet is a big ocean so this is a must
  2. As far as the website goes, it must be properly Optimized (Titles, Tags, and Content)
  3. Set aside some time to actively blog on your site other other sites.  Nature and subtly integrate things that may appear on your site within other blogs.
  4. Work to establish backlinks.  This can be done through blogging but can also be done through articles and internet press releases.
  5. People are EVERYTHING.  The biggest mistake that with people trying to market their site is that the seem to forget about the "real" people element.  Whatever you would do in real life to trump up business, couple it with the same thing in the virtual environment.  Business Cards, Networking Events, Flyers, Radio Commercials are all fair game.
  6. Find a niche and exploit it.

There are tons of specific things that you can do, but within this forum, I can only give limited information because it is what I do for a living and can't give all all of the trade secrets.  Good Luck with your site and never forget the 5 P's of Marketing, even if it is an internet based business.
