Why can't I pick the members I want to Spy

Why can't I pick the members I want to Spy - without the Friend step? In my install customization, I have renamed Spy to "Follow", to be more Twitter-like.

Friending is weird.  We should all be Friends in a social network.

Whether or not I want to Spy/Follow someone is different.

if you have 100,000 frineds and each of those friends also has 100,000 friends and all 100,000 members come on line at the same time...... BANG... website all gone unless you have server the size of texas lol...

Its a good idea but very impractical.... I have admin set to friend with all members and that is enough of a pain in the ass for any site : )

Your so right! I have seen that on a client's site.

The admin is friends with all 14000 members, when couple hundred of those members sign on and off at peak times it really test just how good your server is setup and what it can handle.

No, you missed my point - you're going in the opposite direction.

My reference to "friending is weird" means we should be able to skip Friending.

FaceBook Friending is awful.  There, they added "Subscribe" without Friending. That's what I'm getting at

And then in Dolphin, we pick who appears in the Spy window, similar to FaceBook Subscribe.

Back to my point: can we pick who appears in the Spy window? If not, then what happens is your scenario of texas.

So a member just sent a Friend request to another member, and there it is in the Spy window for EVERY member to see???

That's useless, ridiculous, over load, over reach,  and invasion of privacy.

So under Spy (which I have renamed to "Follow)...

How do I remove the options for "All Activity" and "Profiles Updates".

I just want "Content Updates".

I've looked in Pages Blocks.

As a Member I can set my Privacy settings, but in Admin I don't see a way to set those member privacy settings - that a member could opt to make public.

No, it isn't weird.  What is weird, is someone you don't know, or care to know, being able to see the information that was never intended for them.  We are not all friends in real life, why on earth would we all be friends in some virtual reality?  It makes no sense at all... sorry.

Because mine is a professional network of buyers and sellers.

We are already here for a reason. So we're beyond the Friends junk from moment one.

It's business. It's not about picking friends to sell to.  It's like a Mall, you're set up there in a store, so get with it, and sell to buyers.

The creepy part is social networks where people won't be social.

Here is one topic that should help with some stuff. http://www.boonex.com/forums/topic/Can-we-remove-Friends-Requests-Accepts-from-spy-activity-.htm

There are more topics related to the spy module, i just need to find them. I know they are here somewhere.

Anyhow. The spy module was designed along the lines of the news feed/wall on facebook. It displays activity of your friends. Actually i think it displays all site activity now that i think about it. Doh, my memory is failing.

It is not a follow me module and was not designed with in mind. To do that would require the spy module be rewritten to display data for members from a different list. Instead of site members or friends, it would use a list that was created from something like a follow me button placed on the profile or somewhere.

All Activity

That's way too invasive. Every little thing I do as Admin, members sending Friend requests to others, etc. The middle one, Content Updates, is the only necessary one.

For privacy, and for server/SQL table overload, I just Content Updates.

My first site is small, so it could Content Updates for everyone, but for my next larger site, just for Friends or Follow (subscribe) - like FaceBook.

I don't know the entire situation, but If I were a buyer, I certainly wouldn't want my competitors to know what I was buying, or from whom.

That's just my point!

Spy should be like FaceBook - no invasive breach of privacy by telling the world that I sent an e-mail to someone.

But that I did add a photo or an article, etc. Or did a status update.
