Why don't returns work in comments?

When a user leaves a comment, and hits the return key, the space appears in the text entry area.  When the comment is saved however, the return disappears, and all the text is scrunched together in one paragraph.  Why is that?

Bumpage, this is a pain in the butt and should be addressed...  It just looks un-professional when a user takes the time to comment or add a post, and the formatting they use gets crunked up.

Perhaps the Agents would like to jump in.

All the coders are currently out strikin'.

I just asked this same question and got nothing.

I transferred my data from my D6 site and now all my text is in blocks. It's brutal:

I'm debating a SQL query to double all the returns in the Profiles table, but it seems a lousy fix.

Right, so I guess this isn't getting fixed then? A little html editor for the comments would be awesome.. However, any type of formatting for the comments would be great. A giant block of text that runs on is hard to read and ugly to look at. I've tried every code/tag/insert I can think of, and no dice on getting this to look better at all.
