Worth upgrading to 7.0.1

My current Dolphin 7.0 is working pretty perfect. What would be my benefit to update to 7.0.1?

Over two-hundred fixes, including stability and security.

I thought that was obvious.

What's the success rate with doing the upgrade. I read a lot about horror stories here on the forum

I know...I'm also still using 7.0

I waited sooooo long for 7.0.1 to come out, and now I'm too scared to upgrade.

I'm still debating if I should just wait for 7.0.2 to come out, or if I should just take a giant leap and upload 7.0.1.

There's been way too many horror stories on these forums.

No Signature at this time.

The upgrade really isnt that bad unless you have modded your current 7.0. Since mine was, I found it easier to build a clean 7.0.1 with a new database, then backed up my current site and database. I then re-added all the mods, templates, etc into the 7.0.1 site. Since I backed up my database in a .sql file, I was able to manually run it through phpMyAdmin to complete my duplication of my current site.

One I verified it was all working, I moved the new 7.0.1 to the root and WhamO, I was done.

If you're using a customized codebase, then you will have issues with the upgrade. However, you can always backup your current web site and then try the upgrade. If you encounter any issues, you can always revert to before you applied the upgrade.

Edit: See Zarcon's post.

Zarcon,

Would you mind writing up some instructions on the steps you exactly did but with a little bit more details. I see where you going with this. Just the last step, the " I moved the new 7.0.1 to the root". dont you have to modify a config file to specify the new location of the software, or just copying it to the root will work?

upgraded 7.0 - 7.0.1 and yes site was moded  and yes i did have a few issues after upgrade  but only minor once
p.s keep waiting when 7.0.2 is out u'll have to run the 7.0.1 upgrade first then 7.0.2

This is a great way to go.  I'm particularly concerned about future upgrades.  7.0.1 was only a bug fix and it caused major headaches.  Can't imagine what 7.1 will be like when larger structural changes occur!  I'd love to know the specifics of how you did this, like did you build the site on a separate URL and then move it?  What about the license?  Please PM me if you get the time, or post it here if you think it's appropriate.  I'm sure others like me without your experience would benefit as well.  Thanks.

Yes, you would have to modify the inc/header.inc.php file to reflect your new path. Ex. /home/mysite/public_html/ for the root and for the site URL www.mysite.com instead of www.mysite.com/test

This is kind of like "ask and you have already received it!"  The magic of posts crossing in cyberspace.  Thanks.

Geeeez, I'm just as paranoid about making an upgrade ... EVER !!!

Considering the fact that our site is running about 99% perfectly, the only real issue being how the darn store features don't seem to work correctly, and considering that I believe half of the horror stories have to do with server settings/installations as opposed to actual D7 problems, I can't help but think that an upgrade might just hose our current setup, 50/50 chance eh ... ???

Part of my thinking comes from the questionable aspect of 250 fixes while we're not experiencing any of the problems (yet) that were addressed in those fixes, at least not that I'm aware of. Video functions, uploads, photos, songs, third party flash mods, profile customization, html blocks, etc. are all working and the only thing that we seem to have done differently from most of the people with problems is the fact that we paid for an installation and that we're using a dedicated server for a community site with all of the capabilities of Dolphin. How can there be 250 actual fixes, holy crap ????

Unlike some people, I just don't have the friggen' time to run Dolphin versions side by side, looking for hitches and glitches and problems. This should NOT be the way that any software is ever updated. Either the updates work out of the box or the update might just be crap too, and the forum just has far too many "Oh my god, what happened" posts to blindly trust any upgrade at this point.
Hmmmmm, what to do, what to do ..... ???

I agree. I am in the same boat. PHPBB3 has the BEST upgrade process. It goes through each .php file and compares their actual original code, if it detects that there's different code it will tell you and aks if you want to replace or just skip. It's genius.

I just did an upgrade from 7.0 to 7.0.1 To my surprise pretty much 99% of the upgrade went smooth.

The one step that did not work was the re-install of the Profiler module. That was resolved by modifying the header.inc file and changing the build from 0 to 1 and then re-running the install from admin/tools/modules. The module installed with no issues after that.

Awesome, I'm glad for you!
I'll be trying an update later on this week, Saturday at the latest.
Out of curiosity, are you running your community on a dedicated server as well? Did you have D7 installed by someone else? Are you running any Rayz modules such as Youtube, Global vids, or others? Thanks a bunch for the heads up ...

I am on dedicated server. I do not have RMS enabled. I installed D7 clean install and I do have a few market mods, but after the upgrade my mods worked, they were not affected. Even my custom php blocks were not affected, they all stayed the same.
