changing names of modules purchased

I recently purchased the church module from modzz (excellent vendor by the way am very impressed with his service after the sale as well as his products so far).

I do have a question, if we purchased a module and are using that module can we also change the name of that module within the website we are using it at to another module.

and if so how would this be done.

for example I have churches and i also want to have gymnasiums.  I know this would give me two modules for the price of one so i want to know first if it is legal and second if so how could it be done.

As a module developer i would object to it if it was one of my paid modules. If it was one of my free ones i would allow it.

That being said. The process is not easy. There is a lot to it. It's not just a simple rename.

Start with this doc on creating a module. http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/wiki/DolphinTutorialMyFirstModule

Everything mentioned in there would need to be looked at on a copy of an existing module.

The class file names have to be changed. Must be unique so they do not conflict with existing modules.

The clase files have to be opened and the names of all the classes changed to match the file names.

The language keys and language category needs to be changed.

The config file must be edited and all class, table, language, version and vendor info changed

The sql script files must be edited.

All database table names must be changed.

If you cannot write a module yourself, then making a working copy of one will be just a difficult for you.

so it is easier to just ask the creator to create a module for gyms and charge me the normal price with allowing him/her to sell on the market.

thank you

I've tried rebranding modules a couple of times (with permission).  One time it worked perfectly... another time it didn't.  There are a lot of code "Find and Replace" changes when renaming a module.

As for having one paid copy plus a renamed unpaid copy... doesn't sound ethical.  But hey, since "Churches" is 50% off right now, why not buy another copy and simply ask modzzz for advice on how to successfully rebrand that module.  Just don't expect him to help you fix the it if the code changes don't go well.

When you rebrand, be very very careful when you do a global search and replace... maintain capitalization, etc.

Using a very distinct replacement name, like "gyms" should help you.

Good luck! Smile

i've just decided to ask him to create a module named gyms, it would be better designed for gyms then the renamed church would be anyway.

i actually brought this up some time ago. and seems that many get their panties in a knot about taking their name of your site. i have always renamed the modules, paid and unpaid, not within the files themself, but what shows up on the listing of modules. if you are developing a production site for a client, you dont necessarily need to be, nor are  you compensated to be a bulletin board for anybody.
