how do I set the language in the admin area

If you are trying to set  a different default language for your site. In Admin area Settings/Languages Settings/Settings select your preference there

You may have to also go to Settings/Language Settings/Language check your default language and recompile.

You then may have to go to Admin/Modules/Forum/ and then recompile your language there also

You should then clear your cache under Admin/Tools/Cache

Go to your site admin :

www.yoursite.com/administration/lang_file.php and click settings

change yoursite.com to your URL.
