A full dolphin site in AJAX.  Hmmm... I can see the load times on that one right now.  The bandwidth issues, the constant server calls, the overloading of everything from server to end user. 

Yes it would be cool.  It would be very cool to watch your server & end users lock up because there would be no chance of enough memory to run it all, especially if you got busy.

This idea just seems bad to me for some reason. I can't quite put my finger on it, though.

Some times I think there is too much ajax type stuff going on with D7.

Have you watched the network activity using firefox/firebug?

And the scripts that get called every few seconds by every member that is online, for every window they have open gets hammered.

From what I have seen, none of those scripts have been optimized. E.G. they include files that include more files, in sub folders with rewrite rules.
