error while loading shared libraries

I am getting the following errors (sent via cron messages sent to webmaster)

/usr/local/bin/php: error while loading shared libraries: libpthread.so.0: cannot open shared object file: Error 23

I also get simular error messages (sent via cron messages to webmaster) that state instead of "Error 23" - it states "to many files open" or "no such file or directory"

Why would I get these error messages, what does it mean and how do I resolve it?

My host resolved the problem, a couple processes crashed and where restarted.
