how to use ajax for the registration fields?

Hi friends,

Is there a way or any mod that uses ajax in the login/registration form such that when the user is typing the details, it checks them field by field and validate them e.g "username not available","pasword is incorrect".

I think, this really saves a lot of time for the end-user. Any clues would be appreciated.
