news target window

I am trying to target my news in a new window. I select open in new window. I view the html source that shows target="_blank" but when i post the news article it does not save the target info. So basically it loads in the current window meaning my user has to click back to get back to the website. I have tried this numerous times and also tried posting and then updating the link afterwards in the edit a news post area. But nothing has worked.  Please help.

Where are you putting the target? In a link inside the tinymce editor window?

The editor strips out any html tags it is not configured to allow.

The target is one of the tags that is not allowed by default.

I don't know exactly where you would need to go to change that. I don't think anyone has asked for that yet.

I'll have to look into it.

im not real clear on what he is even trying to share here. if you are setting target=_blank, then its going exactly where you told it to, so i am not sure what you are trying to accomplish? are you wishing to stay on the current page? since you iterate that your user then has to use the back button, it would be my presumption that you are looking for target="_self", because target="_blank is going to load a new page every time you hit that link.

ok. if it strips it out then that would make sense. because it is not saving the target. on a news item, comment, etc with an outside link, i definitely would want it to open in a new window. let me know if u figure that out. sorry if I reported it as a bug, but it seemed like one initially :)

Actually, that might be a bug. I just tested it here on unity and it works.

http://terabyte-hosting.com/d7/m/news/view/Creating-a-news-Article-and-using-_blank-in-the-source-code

ok i posted a news article. you can find it on the home page as well then click on the link to read the news article and if you click the link, it opens google _blank as best i can tell?

then i viewed the source, and the whole thing is rewritten from the way i actually wrote it:

this is what is showing up in source;

<div class="news-info">
<div class="news-caption">
<a class="news-caption" href="http://terabyte-hosting.com/d7/m/news/view/Creating-a-news-Article-and-using-_blank-in-the-source-code">Creating a news Article and using _blank in the source code</a>

</div>

Then i edited the post and same thing it is stripping the target tag out

second round and on these i stripped teh class that is calling unity's css obviously.

Ok here we go. boy that was something else there. never was it mentioned that we were creating a news article and the _blank wouldnt work or save when you update your html. so here it goes.

Well, then it's obviously not working. _blank means new window. It opens it the same window, so it is a real bug then.

Quote · 9 Jan 2010

tried it in both the html editor and using the tinymce, both methods strip the target tag out, and actually reverse the string you provided so where we typically write <a href="someurl.com" sometitle="title">the link</a> the output is being published in reverse.

now hank, it was not insinuated that you were crazy, or even that this wasnt a bug, your post was very inconclusive on what you were even doing, nor was it clear what steps you were taking to verify the issue you were having. the best place to post something like this and ask for confirmation, is in the forums, not immediately in the thread for bugs. now that we have some idea of what you were trying to do, and more than one person has verified what you are stating is that the tinymce and the html editor strips out the target tag, and you are not able to declare a target.

@deano and hank, yes this can be confirmed as a bug. tinymce and html editor strip the target tag from a post and does not allow declaration of a target.

yeah i cant submit a ticket, so all i can do is help get it sorted by testing.

now what i am doing here because i see that the side box where our name is at does allow for the _blank target tag, now i am checking to see if the field area here where we are allowed to type will let you put an _blank tag or any other target tag.

Hank Couldnt use the _blank target tag in his href deano and dosdawg have both assisted in testing this issue

Now that is annoying, this editor allows for the declaration of a target specifically the _blank so they have something stripping the target tags out of the posts in the entire site i do believe.

also hank PITA i know, but you can open the database and throw in your target i.e.

edited from the database --> http://terabyte-hosting.com/d7/m/news/view/Creating-a-news-Article-and-using-_blank-in-the-source-code

now when i view the source _blank is there.

just thought about something else, would it be an option to have your news resolve on your site rather than posting a link that would take a member off the site?

wondering if you could just do a php include on the page you want to serve, by creating a new page and then adding a link in the news module to the new page that you created?

hmmmm, i might have to give that a shot, and see what that produces

I've been griping a long time about the fact that admins should be able to post whatever they damn well please on their own site, without their posts being filtered to death like a standard members post.  It makes no sense.  I know Boonex's intent is probably to make their script idiot proof, but there should be options to disable the safeguards for admins who are not idiots.

you are correct HL, there should not be these limitations on the admin section of the site. that should be options for the admin to even control to the members and could even set controllers on a per membership level.

All you have to do is open the html windoe in thr editor, and paste the youtube embed code.  Youtube embed code is allowed, and won't be stripped out when the news article is saved.
