phpBB3 vs. ORCA

I have seen a lot of people having issues with ORCA, so I am just letting you know that I have installed phpBB3 on Dolphin7 using Sasha's MOD to integrate the module..

The Install from phpBB is very easy, skill level 5/10 I would think, instructions are clear and the Integration Mod again is very easy and skill level 5/10..

The phpBB3 is very easy to both setup and use, probably a 20-30min learning curve, it LOOKS good and comes with a lot of extra capabilities compared to ORCA.. one being attachments, and photo insert via UPLOAD rather than URL referencing..

So, I said my piece, if anyone is keen to try it out and need a helping hand, let me know..

Regards, Ken

I used the mod for D6 and it worked well, I screwed it up a couple of times with mods and always got support afterwords, I plan on using their script again for D7 and you know what they say about reviews the best is repeat business.

OK.  That's a pretty lousy integration if you ask me.  Just click on the PHPBB  'Register' link, and you'll see what I mean....

It looks like a great modul. But i doesnt work with facebook connect. I created an account with facebook connect and when i had to login my password was wrong?!? so i couldnt login to the forum.

Then i tried to post on the one string showing, but got redirected back to login to forum.

Now, for some reason i cant create another profile, so its impossible for me to try out this forum. I cannot post anything.

Is it possible to turn off this login thing on the forum?

Regards

Morten

Well... there ya go.  Two major things wrong with it already.  The mod needs a lot of work.... but I can't tell people that directly on the mod page unless I buy it.

Really?   Perhaps you forgot to update your demo then, because I took this screen shot a few minutes ago.   This is what can happen when you don't open links that exist in phpbb, in the top window.  You have some navigation issues to work on.

That is just one of many reasons that frames are bad.

Has any one looked in to including the D7 header and footer in the phpbb3 template?

"Has any one looked in to including the D7 header and footer in the phpbb3 template?"

I did this for my d6-Phbb esase mod, I originally did it because to forum was getting indexed but not the iframe so there was no way to nav to the main site....

Now the problem is you can not get it look exact but you can get it close, and every time you change the nav bar or header in boonex you have to manually change the phpbb one as you can see by my example it got missed a couple of times more so that the forum was not being used then anything else.

Example:

 LOL! This is bad ... but is it any worse than endless opened tabs that the Fish Forum creates as you use it? Clicking on any of the RSS feeds will always open a new tab in the fish forum every time...

Hi, I guess I started this topic, and would liek to sumarise.. :)

I can see there are some pro and cons, I am yet to find teh cons.. then again, I do not use facebook connect..

However, the ability to upload and imbed photos and attachments is a MUST have in a FORUM and ORCA only support URL linking..  this is the initial reason I looked outside of standard Dolphin Mods.. as I wanted a forum with upload capability that was easy to use even for novice users..

..and I am happy we all threw in our pros and cons, as Sasha had some feedback and people contemplating replacing ORCA likewaise had feedback..

Thanks all..!!

I've installed this mod and have some problems.  They are probably easy to fix, but I have gotten no response from the developer.  It is very frustrating.

All 3'rd party modules released before the 7.0.1 update do that. You have 3 choices.

1) Wait for the mod developer to release a 7.0.1 version.

2) Modify inc\header.inc.php and change this

$site['ver']               = '7.0';
$site['build']             = '1';

to this

$site['ver']               = '7.0';
$site['build']             = '0';

Install the mod and then change the version number back.

3) Open modules\vendorname\modulename\install\config.php

vendorname is the name of the vendors module directory and modulename is the name of the module.

Change this.

'version' => '1.0.0',

to This

'version' => '1.0.1',

It's up to you which of those 3 options you want to do.

I just had the integration done with this mod and it went flawlessly.  No problems at all.

I use  this mod also, had it also in D6 and working smooth.
Only you need to remove the registration links froms phpbb3 itself. EsAse can do that if you don't want to search yourself.

I'am happy with it.

Quote · 6 May 2010

Contact the SashaE, this mod was built to migrate users from dolphin to phpbb among other things.

I am sure for a small price he can write a script for you that will migrate your users from phpbb to dolphin, if you have a thousand members already and lots of posts in your forum I highly suggest you ask him for some help.

I ended up using this one:

http://www.boonex.com/unity/extensions/entry/Forum_Replace_ORCA_with_PHPBB

http://www.boonex.com/unity/extensions/entry/Forum_PHPBB_Basic_Integration

They installed it quickly and it worked right away.  It was terrific.

As for existing users moving over, the first time they log in to Dolphin it sends their info over to phpBB and they are automatically logged in to the forum.
