ray media server

hi ,

i am looking at purchasing the $99 version of dolphin and quite a lot of mods on the market.

what is the users experience of the latest version as i have read alot of posts about the site crashing if it gets even just a few thousand members accessing the site at once?

the ray media server is this still used in dolphin and do you require a license for this or can i install it on my own  box?

what is the quality like of the videos uploaded are the better than what they were as i saw some posts about them not being great?

hope you guys can help me out.

thanks

You need a server that meets the requirements of Dolphin.  That's wherre a lot of people mess up and run into problems.  You also can't be running a large Dolphin site on shared hosting.  Those two are one of the most common reasons why Dolphin sites can stop working.  That and core files that have been edited to hell and back.

A paid license is not required to use the media server (which is still used for the advanced audio/video features, and is required for video comments, A/V chat and messaging, etc.).  You need a VPS or dedicated server to install it, or find a hosting provider that offers standalone hosting.  For installation instructions, see: http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/wiki/RayMediaServerInstallation

Can't comment on the video quality.  I've seen mixed results, but this can be due to misconfigurations.  I do know that someone here was running tests on the media server to see why video quality is lower in some cases.  Haven't heard anything more about it.

is the ray media server a custom build that someone at boonex has created? has anyone manage to use another media server or is this the only one you can use?

i know on other scripts people have integrated tinychat but wondered if this was possible as on market there is nothing else i can see apart from rayz?

thanks again

It's a modified Red5 instance.  You can't use another media server (or even standard Red5) out-of-the-box.  I'm not aware of anyone making the needed changes to replace the default media server with something else.

TinyChat was available from a developer here, but he removed it along with most of his other products after we (moderators) started bringing down the hammer on him for an unrelated reason.

Sure.  Just install either OpenJDK or Oracle's JRE.

It's a personal choice.  Both can run Dolphin well, since both are mainstream Linux distributions with server options.  Just choose the one you're most comfortable with.

I don't know about Ubuntu's RAM usage as a server.  RMS requires Java and does eat up a lot of resources, especially RAM.  I would recommend 2 GB for constant usage.

It's based on Red5 and developed and supported by BoonEx.  You can still use the basic video and sounds modules, as well as the chat and messenger modules with text.  But to enable video comments and audio/video chat and messaging, the media server is required.
