Is there a way for you to look at the server apache logs, or get your host to look?

Are you positive it is running php 5.2

Reason i ask, is this is the exact same symptom that occurs with older versions of PHP when D7 tries to set the cookie when someone logs in. D7 uses a different method than D6 and requires the php setcookie function to support the new parameters passed.

So you need to see if a setcookie warning is showing up in the apache web server logs.
