A splash page is utilized, normally by adult oriented sites, for the purpose of informing/altering visitors to site content, legal responsibility and such before they actually enter the site.  It's just a very basic HTML page with an Enter/Exit Button.

As far as your menu goes, go into your Admin Panel and just turn things off to non-members.

before you alter the visitor, you should first inquire as to whether or not they need to be altered? LOL MD

splash can be used for several different reasons, MD has touched on one, and the idea behind this is an intro page, albeit adult oriented or any other prejudicial or non-conforming content that could be visible to any visitor of your site. the splash can be as simple as the Adult Content and then the required laws, because just asking a 15 year old boy to agree that he is 18 really does nothing.

“I hereby affirm, under the penalties of perjury pursuant to 28 U.S.C. §1746, that I am currently 18 years or older (21 in some states).” Providing a false declaration under penalties of perjury is a criminal offense. This agreement document constitutes a sworn declaration under federal law, and is intended to be governed by the Electronic Signatures Act.

this is the standardized message on adult content related sites.

Now this does not say that your site has to be adult oriented. you can opt for a splash page for political reasons, and in doing so a splash would indicate that all content are not necessarily the views of the site owner and under the Freedom of Information Act, the information is available solely as an information source.

there is some drawn out process in that as well.

a splash page can be simple agreement to age verification, or as mentioned a declaration of views and opinions that could be deemed offensive. the format is of your choice, however, you have to take measures for serving a variance of splash pages. typically they are in the form of index.html where index.html gets served on most web servers prior to index.php. so the objective would be to load the splash page with whatever content you wanted on there, and then upon an action (enter or leave) in most cases, the button is either coded to enter the site or exit to some pre-determined url that you as the website owner have provided.

i've noticed gorpus is coding splash pages with most of his adult oriented style templates. the other formats you will find as splash pages will contain flash, jscript, ajax, java, or any other number of programming/scripting languages.

the primary object of a splash page would be an introduction of sorts alerting your would be visitors of the potentially offensive content.

so before you alter your visitors, just create the splash page.
