Hi, this issue is not that he wants to allow registration from 14 to 99 years, but 14 to 18 years that the contact between them, and people over 18 years old do not contact for protection minors so. Dolphin 7.1.4 - Hosting My server - www.e4k.fr |
That would be an interesting mod. Not sure if it's completely possible tho http://towtalk.net ... Hosted by Zarconia.net! |
I would think the easiest way to try and do this would be to tie into the privacy system. However, if you also want to limit content viewing of material that is not suitable to non-adult members that adds more to the twist. Plus, we need that "adult material" thing I posted about some time back and hope that members mark their content as "adult"; and adult does not necessarily mean nudity LOL. Geeks, making the world a better place |
Hi
the way I want it the way cyberia said I think that would be a great mod if someone as one or can make one :) and that would protect the kids from adults I need to see if maybe I can hire someone that can do something like that I think every one on Boonex would love to have something that protect miners

Might be a solution ... put dolphin in your root directory go to admin and set it to 18-whatever. Put another dolphin in a sub domain call it something appropriate eg teen and go to admin and set age to 14-17 if you have a license it should work on both instances of dolphin. Easier to control access and what can be viewed this way.
|
hmm that's a very interesting concept.. but how would it work when someone sign up to the site and they are minors how would that send them to the 14+ site and not to the 18+ ? and I guess I have just to copy the site to the teen |
You can just create a splash page describing the two sites one for adult one for kids and have them click on the appropriate link and they will be taken to the site of their choice. I'm sure one of the splashpage mod deveolpers can assist you with a custom splash page. Not sure but you can probably edit the error return for age in the join form that will let them know they are not allowed to join the site because of age and have a link in there directing them to the correct site, edit this for both sites and you have no need for a splash page. |
Someone asked about subdomains and licenses and it was stated that you would need a license for the subdomain as well. Geeks, making the world a better place |
that's very good idea it would make it soo much easier to control that's for sure I just have to figer out how I would go all about it
Thank you :)

I edited my above response not sure if you saw it. As far as the sub domain license issue that's something that probably needs to be checked technically the setup described is the same site just split up. I'm sure you could contact Boonex and ask.

Just checked the license agreement, it leaves a lot for interpretation.

So, what's to keep adults over the age of 18 from signing up as a 14 year old and preying on teenagers? If all you do, is rely on the "age" entered on the join form, that sort of thing is inevitable. It's a lot easier to check if a person is as old as they say they are, but it's a bit more difficult to determine if they are as young as they say they are. What one Dolphin site owner did for a women only site, was that all new members had to be approved by an admin to activate their accounts, and the requirement was a video chat session with the site admin to verify their gender. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
You can never stop all the unwanted signups. Kids can signup for adult sites and adults can signup for kids sites. That's a fact of life all you can do Is try and I think that is all he is doing here. Trying to keep them separate last I check Secondlife.com had two grids one for adults and one for teens. That did not stop fraudulent signups but it did help.
Video chat to verify, sounds a bit creepy to me I can only imagine the freaks that could use that idea.
Just do what we can and make sure we have an ironclad TOS.
|
Creating a mod like this is a good idea but in today's litigious societies, may not be a smart thing to do. The mod would have to be perfect with no possibility of failure or the creator and/or the site owner could be opened up for some very serious liabilities. Co-mingling one site for children and adults is just a recipe for disaster.
It might be better to build two distinctly different sites, one for children, one for adults instead.

so how facebook does it ? u can sign in when u 14 and no one can see u if u not in that age group I think maybe boonex can come up with something like that or someone |
RE:

It wasn't creepy for the women only site that wanted to stop men from registering on the site, and the video chat session was with a site admin. As I understand, the women members of the site took comfort in knowing that all site members had been gender verified. Nowhere did I say this was a good idea for a children's site... I believe I just cited what one Dolphin site owner did in one particular scenario.
What's really creepy, is your suggestion that rather than taking additional precautions to protect the privacy of children, a TOS agreement to cover your own ass is all that is needed.

I'll be happy if Boonex can come up with Dolphin 8 with no bugs. |

I would think there is a sexual discrimination lawsuit in there somewhere.

so I think the best for now is leave it as 18+ and keep monitoring for kids that's the only think u can really do to be on the safe side but its not 100% safe proof kids can always say they 18 when they 15 and hope for the best and make sure you check on all members when they sign up and I guess if u don't feel they 18 I guess u can always ask them to send u a gov photo ID to be verified if they don't you can just kick them out that's one way |

Let me quote myself. I was under the impression that night6000 wanted a site that kids and adults could join and that he did not want the two to have any interaction with the other. No matter what you do you cannot stop one from joining the other. I have kids and the only sure way to keep them safe is for parents like me to take an active role in their lives. I am so sick and tired of parents expecting everyone else in the world to babysit their kids. I'm sorry but I lived in 8 countries the US being my home and from what I've seen out there in the world the US has the highest % of piss poor parents. I am not a rich person and yes you better believe when my site goes live again I will have an ironclad TOS reviewed by a lawyer, because I do not need some backwards uneducated parent suing me. I'm not McDonalds and unlike McDonalds being sued for making kids fat and unhealthy I do not want to leave a door open. This way of thinking is only good business sense.

Perhaps... but I doubt any male would want to bring a discrimination lawsuit for being denied membership to a lesbian website.

haha I kinda want to see what really would happen if a guy try to sue for that |

A quick search reveals evidence that a lot of people are very concerned about the online privacy of children. If you really want to allow minors on your site, it is safe to say that a lot of people would appreciate you going the extra mile to protect their privacy and security. Research the topic a bit, and see if you can find real ways to implement protection of minors... other than one of those "ironclad TOS things" ...... it just might pay off.

Happened in NYC man went and sued all the bars that advertised "ladies night - women drink free" He won. Another man I think in New Zealand sued the church when his boat sank because his insurance stated it was an act of god. You don't see that clause in insurance policies anymore.

If you read the posts you will see I'm the one that suggested he have two sites and control the age separately. I take child abuse seriously to the extreme that I think spanking your kids is abuse. My kids where never spanked because all that teaches them is violence is an accepted way to deal with problems. Communication is by far more effective.

Probably why children today think they can get away with anything they want to, because they know there will be no real consequences.

My kids are great they get straight A's in school not an easy feat in NYC! at 13 and 15 they are already scouting colleges and planning their future. They both speak 3 languages English, Romanian and French. They understand consequences very well and I did not ever have to beat them or what you like to call spank.

Are you kidding me! Really! Your prepared to put your members before your business which also means before your family. If your a sole propriety, meaning your not incorporated and yes a website can be considered a business. You are leaving yourself open to lose ALL of your personal assets. This is very poor business management. Not to mention the fact that your not protecting your family. All right for someone that might be living in their parents basement and own nothing. For the rest of us that have worked hard to improve are lives prefer to protect ourselves. My website is not being developed to be a hobby. It is a business! Name a business that actually gives a damn about it's customers.

I wanted juniors to be able to join my site but I also wanted to restrict what they could do. I had Anton add some code so that when anyone joined with an age under 16 they automaticaly joined as "Junior" membership. I then set rules for junior membership in membership options.
I placed a clear disclaimer on the join page too. So far so good : )

@ cybera did u try that module and it work good ? if it does that would be great if it can do what i'm trying to do

That is one of the most pathetic attitudes I have ever seen. Your reading comprehension skills could use sharpening also. I can tell you that every business I have ever owned, "gave a damn about the customers." Without customers, you have no business. Customers ARE your most valuable asset. Treat customers fairly, with respect, and see that they are not taken advantage of. You can go ahead and conduct business in a "cover my own ass first mode if I get sued", but I'm all about not getting sued in the first place.

I never said do not provide your customers with a quality product. Here is the definition of business http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/business pay attention to the part that states
3
a : a usually commercial or mercantile activity engaged in as a means of livelihood : trade, line <in the restaurant business>
How is it good business to not protect your livelihood. To not "cover your own ass" is insane on so many levels. If you get sued once which unfortunately happens all to often here in the US you run the chance of losing your business, your livelihood and all of your personal assets. Now if this was to happen how are you benefitting your family (which should always come first) and all of your now nonexistent customers? You have nothing left.
I will always take your advice on Dolphin issues but as to your business acumen sorry I will have to pass. Now I think we have hijacked the original topic way to much and should leave things as they are you have your opinion and I have mine.

RE

No.... we are still basically on topic. My attitude is about taking meaningful steps to protect the online privacy and security of minors, rather than just ignoring it through some cleverly worded TOS. You can have the most brilliant TOS ever devised in the history of the planet, but if a court determines that you were negligent and indifferent about issues where minors are concerned, your TOS won't save your ass.
