the sites that are letting bots take over

when i started my site last year i remember thinking how impressed i was with ustillup and atin2.com and their member counts,, well that was before i set my site up and realized all of their members are the china bot ads.. i just wonder with ustillup approching 200 thousand members and 90 percent of them being bots or porn how would he even begin to fix the site if he wanted to?  seems like if you wanted to rid the site of all the bots and junk would would be better off scraping the whole site and starting over this time with more control.

my question is, is there any reason to let your site get that out of hand with fake profile other then havingt a high member count?

do the bots click ads or something?

isnt it just them mooching off of your page rank with you getting nothing in return other then sever lag and unusable blogs and forums?

No, they don't click the ads. I think most of the sites that are over run with them are people who just put their site on auto-pilot and don't ever moderate anything. I also don't think most people realize that some of these spammers search for spam phrases to find sites that already have spam. If they see a bunch there they know the owner doesn't stay on top of things. I think that's why several times we have talked about spam here and then a spammer posts an ad on our thread where we were complaining about spam lol.

Years ago I helped a guy move his German dating site to a new server. He was so proud of how it had grown and how many members he had. When I started looking at the database I realized 90% of his members were spammers. I honestly didn't have the heart to tell him.  I guess a lot of people don't know what to look for? To me if someone joins and their profile talks about knock off prada purses or ugg boots its pretty obvious, lol.

Let the sites run them self is simple, promotion memberships end full databases.

If they are true members, they will take the time to become full members.

Blogs, and other sections of my sites are never spammed now with the new controls we have in the admin section, and implementing the tools in this article into your sites.

im on top of my site and always check for those bots on a daily basis, i get about 2-3 a week and tried to add a block on my join page  that said "$pammers dont waste your time. you will be deleted" guess what 2 days later i was getting hit with 15-20 fake members or $spammers

so yes i agree that they use key words to find you...

and yes i deleted that message from the join field lol

You remind me of the guy who thought asking the spammers nicely would help.  I like to think it did, but it didn't.

I use that on all the sites I work on.  It works, and it works nicely.  Block the right countries and the spam registrations will drop from 100/day to 0.
