the only thing that may need to be done is adding new carriers to the carrier list - it is a predefined list in the admin section. Other than that - no other changes would need to be made for the module to work. OK, I did install the module or last zip you had. I don't get the buttons on the profile. I have a test site setup to work on this. I can PM the details if you want to look. ManOfTeal.COM a Proud UNA site, six years running strong! |

Your country is missing from a lot of list. Must be a reason for this.
I did find this site with some more international listings.. ManOfTeal.COM a Proud UNA site, six years running strong! |
I'm surprised no one has crafted a sms module that uses a gateway like Clickatell. Sure it's a paid service, but a little over a penny per message isn't that bad. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
Interesting thought HL. I checked it out but the work needed to implement an additional party into the equation is not currently in my schedule. Plus. I would be responsible for purchssing credits for users to be able to use sms sending. That means extra coding to pass the cost down to the person sending the text, which will be a hassle in itself - because I am not going to be paying for users to send dumb messages like "hey, whatcha doin". At least how it is right now is universal, and just about every carrier has a way to send emails to phone numbers - which is all my module really is. I have been looking into running my own gateway (2 feasable options I have been researching), though. caredesign.net |
Hi guys and gals Some time ago I built my own SMS feature which I'm using on my site. I have a dedicated inbound number which updates the wall of the registered mobile user and with a @username symbol sends a message to the inbox of that user and #username send a post to the members wall. Members can list thier number on my site which automatically generates a 6 number code (random) which is sent to the user. te user then enters the code to confirm ownership of mobile. I am using a paid service for my text messages but I have got really good rates for the UK and international. I have also built a mod to let businesses list their goods and services and when a members reserve an item, the business automatically recevies a text message with the reservation. Finally I built a simple mod so my business members can have their business contact details sent to a member by the member putting their mobile number into a field. Within a few seconds the owner of the mobile then receives the text message with the contact details of the business. These are just a couple of the ways I have used SMS with my site. TIA |

When I upgrade my membership on Boonex, I will be making my modules available. TIA |
how about module for user to add their phone number by logging in to google account or facebook account.. module will pull the verified phone number and add to boonex.. is it possible ..can anyone make a module like this one.. |
While it is possible - let's brainstorm why/how you would accomplish this. Now - I do not know your reasoning why, but Iwill say this. In order to accomplish this feature, you would need the Google API and all that stuff. Then, once that has all been setup, and the code written, the user has to somehow log in to their google account and accept that your site wants to retrieve data from their account. Once accepted, then the info can be retrieved. From the user standpoint, it may take around 30 seconds. Coding time can probably take at least an hour (this is about how long it took me for a similar project). In the essence of time - it is quicker and easier to have them enter their number manually. Plus - what if a user does not have their number in google, or wants to use a different number altogether. Just my thoughts. caredesign.net |

Thanks for the mod. It's been over 8 months from the last post but i just saw this and it sounds interesting. I downloaded the mod and tried to install but I got an error "Installation of: SMS Failed". Does this work with Version 7.1.5? Also, the 6 digit mobile number verification that NO118 has talked about (2 Sep 2014) sounds a good privacy addition and I will try to add it (I am fairly new to Dolphin) and share. |
Never mind about the error message. It was from the config version check: 'compatible_with' => array( '7.1.5' I have installed it and I will start working on it tonight.
|
yes, it has been a while now. I recently setup a new 7.1.5 site, and except for having to change the compatability version, it worked like it did before. Imagine my surprise, lol. I would greatly appreciate any feedback regarding your experience with this module. caredesign.net |
Well I installed the mod, however after the installation I couldn't find the mod within the mods' list. I thought that maybe something went wrong during the install. So I uninstalled it and tried to re-install it without any success. I get "Installation of: SMS Failed". Interesting, first time installed and now...? Any idea? |
Sorry about the mixup. I should have stated that the module will not appear in the Modules list as there are no administrative functions necessary for the module to work. When you click the plus sign next to the error message, what is the exact error. I will have to make changes to the uninstall script. It sounds like I did not remove an entry from one of the databases. That's the only thing I can think of right now. This is a post from way earlier in case you missed it. Thanks Newton!!! ok - I forgot to mention - you can not send an SMS if the person has not added their SMS number that they can be reached at. Example. Sorry for the delay. I realized that the error could be from an entry that is not being deleted and that we are trying to create a duplicate entry. However, I din't notice (know about) the plus sign next to the error message and I was busy for the last 2 days. So bottom line - you are right. I assume after you have added the privacy:
-- privacy INSERT INTO `sys_privacy_actions` (`module_uri`, `name`, `title`, `default_group`) VALUES ('sms', 'receive_sms', '_cf_sms_privacy_receive_sms', '3');
you forgot to add it in the delete list.
I have now added: DELETE FROM `sys_privacy_actions` WHERE `name` = 'receive_sms'; in your uninstall.sql and everything is OK.
I installed and uninstalled without any problem.
I will update with my results.
Thanks! |
I just found a small glitch: After I added an SMS number I decided to go back and change the "Receive SMS from Only" value from "Public" to "Friends". So I used the browser back button, changed the value and re-submitted the form, which created 4 entries. I think it would be good to prevent this from happening. Then when I click on one of the "Remove" links - to remove a number, three of the numbers were removed and only 1 left on the list. I didn't look into the code so I'm not sure what's happening. After I did the remaining settings I tried to send an SMS and it works like a charm - at list for me. Here is the body of my first test SMS:
FRM: (my-registered-sms-number) SUBJ: SMS from (my-name) MSG: (my-message) (time)
Secondly, I changed my setting to receive SMS from "Public" and I logged in with a different test account that doesn't have a registered SMS number. When I clicked on "Send an SMS" button on my default account it poped-up the send SMS window. Window has an SMS number and an SMS message fields. Both fields are marked required(*). I sent the first test SMS by submitting a random SMS number, which went through and is very similar to my first message. Downside - I can forge the SMS/phone number and spam. My third test, I tried to send an SMS without providing a number in the REQUIRED SMS number field. The SMS was sent successfully and it showed sent from my registered email address - instead of the phone number, which is good too.
I remember I read on this thread someone has offered, and I agree with him/her, I think it would be a good idea, to add an "SMS Number Verification" by sending a code to the SMS number provided and asking the user to verify the number before the SMS number can be added. And if the SMS number field needs to be required then it needs to be enforced or the required(*) can be removed.
About my personal preferences: 1. A small change: On domainname.com/m/sms/my page, along with the phone number and carrier info, it would be better to have the value of "Receive SMS From Only" too. 2. Also, it could be a good idea to have the SMS number field inside Edit Profile Info form, since it is part of the profile data. I think this is a great mod.
Thanks ProfessorSr!

Since I have some free time right now, I also tested and corrected the list that was provided by ProfessorSr on 19 Jan 2014. I have inserted in my SQL and SQL syntax-wise it is OK, however I am not sure if they really work.

@hiorti - I appreciate the time you took to give your suggestions and comments and apologize for not responding sooner. When I put this module together it was for a specific need, and as such, it works perfectly for that need. I will admit, I did not consider other usage scenarios and did not test as much as I should have. I am grateful that you took the time to put this module through some hoops and see what it could or could not do. This weekend I will look at your proposed suggestions and see what I can get added/corrected. Thanks again. caredesign.net |
Hi All,
The mod I have created works with Text Local a UK SMS provider. By using this method I do not need to rely on the members putting their carrier in. First I created a button called edit mobile: This then takes the user to: The user will then receive their code like this: On the brower they will see this where they enter the code: Once accepted, they will see the following: This mod can be customised for any SMS provider like clickatel, I would need to change the API for the SMS provider. I have also changed MODZZZ mod Classifieds. I have created a platform where businesses can list thier goods and services they want to sell which allows members to fill in a short form and the reservation is then either emailed or sent by text message, subject the the option checked in the business probile. I have also included an SMS feature on the profile page which will give visitor to the page he option to receive a personal message from a business to a mobile. This give the business the opportunity to use these numbers for mobile marketing. They next see: Then the mobile receives: The business goes to edit their profile and change the message here: This is how I have used SMS in my site. I know there's a cost but this is made up by paying businesses. |
